The Central Peak ranges from Mam Tor and Castleton in the north to the river Wye and Bakewell in the south. To the east the river Derwent and Hathersage form a natural boundary while to the west the area tapers towards Buxton. The area is part of the "White Peak" and includes most of the Derbyshire Dales (notably Wye Dale, Monsal Dale, Millers Dale, Tideswell Dale, Chee Dale, Cressbrook Dale and Monks Dale).

The main towns and villages include Ashford, Bakewell, Bamford, Bradwell, Buxton, Castleton, Chelmorton, Eyam, Flagg, Foolow, Great Hucklow, Great Longstone, Hathersage, Hope, Millers Dale, Monyash, Peak Forest, Stony Middleton, Taddington, and Tideswell.

The highest points in the Central Peak include Mam Tor, Lose Hill and Win Hill.
