It looked a promising day as far as the weather was concerned so I decided to head off for Castleton for a walk along the Great Ridge. I parked at the junction of roads between the Winnats Pass and the old road which heads towards Mam Farm. I really enjoy this area with its famous caves.
I have never walked up the Winnats Pass before. There is a small path which runs up the pass on the right hand side all the way up to Winnats Head Farm. I took this path and then headed off across fields to Windy Knoll. The sun came out as I reached the top of the Winnats Pass.
My route was then to cross over to Mam Nick (where there is a car park for those who want to start their walk from here). I then ascended to the summit of Mam Tor. Wow ... it was certainly windy at the top ... I could hardly stand up and in fact hardly keep still to take any photos. The path across the Great Ridge is an obvious one. After a short stop at Mam Tor I then descended to Hollins Cross. It was still very windy but at least the sun was out. I then made my way up Barker Bank and on to Back Tor. Before ascending Back Tor I came across 2 ponies just minding their own business. Next I headed off towards Lose Hill. Just before I made the last ascent up to Lose Hill and just before as stile I decided to stop for a moment or two. Ahead of me was clear blue sky ... as I turned to look behind me there was black clouds ... and in just a few moments a heavy hail storm. It was a shock as I was not expecting it. I waited for the storm to pass before climbing up to the top of Lose Hill.
I did not stay long before descending back down to Back Tor. The sun came out again as I took a path down the slopes of Back Tor to the Hollowford Road. I then made my way back into the village of Castleton (which was quiet today). Some shops still had Christmas items in their windows. This was a very enjoyable walk even though the weather was quite changeable.
