The morning started with dark skies and hail storms. I had parked up in Little Town to complete two more of my second round Wainwrights. After getting my walking gear on and found that it was still hailing I decided to stop in the car until the bad weather had passed.

After waiting for almost half an hour the skies started to look a little less menacing. It was still not too bright but at least it was dry. I left the car in the small car park next to Chapel Bridge. Not far from the bridge is the quaint church of Newlands. I thought I would call in on my way back later on. After the church the road slowly rises to a stile which heads over fields to Keskadale Farm.

Once at Keskadale Farm the path rises steeply up the ridge to Knott Rigg. As I left the road and before climbing a stile over a fence I had to listen to several barking dogs that were in their kennels. The ridge route is an undulating one but not too difficult to ascend. The views back down into the Newlands Valley were lovely. The views towards Robinson were not so good as the fell tops were still in cloud.

I eventually arrived at Knott Rigg where the wind was quite strong but the sun was starting to appear. From this point onward the weather just got better. In fact the views from Ill Crag over to Ard Crags were great.

It had been a long since I was last on this ridge but it was great to return again. There were only three other walkers on the ridge today. From Ard Crags the views down into Newlands and beyond are fantastic. The descent from Ard Crags is quite a steep one down across Aikin Knott. I think I must have missed a path somewhere because I ended up back down at the road near Gillbrow (which took me over farmland). However from Gillbrow it was an easy return route to Chapel Bridge at Little Town.

Before getting back to the car I decided to call in to Newlands Church. It was well worth the visit.
